Engineering in the News: May 2011

CNN recently reported on a study from UCLA’s High Education Research Institute, which found (that) “students in science, math and engineering take longer to complete their degrees than students who start out majoring in other fields.”

The article, discusses the difficulties in completing an engineering degree, and uses a recent chemical engineering student from Illinois as an example of the perseverance necessary to succeed.

Angelica Hernandez, AZ B 2011, is profiled in an article from the Daily Reporter. Hernandez is graduated this month with a degree in mechanical engineering from Arizona State University.

However, her status as an illegal immigrant in the United States is making it difficult for her to find work even with her exemplary record as a student. Read more about Angelica and her struggles

In a recent press release, Stony Brook University (SBU) announced the establishment of a Biotechnology Commercialization Fund to support the development of biomedical technologies emerging at SBU.

All six projects selected for funding are highlighted. The “projects center on the discovery of new diagnostics and therapeutics in areas such as musculoskeletal diseases, metabolic and cognitive disorders, cancer, burn injuries, and other medical conditions.”
