Campus News: June 2011

Earlier this week, Kettering University opened new chemical engineering facilities. The lab, classroom, design center, and faculty offices are part of Kettering’s investment in its newest academic major.

University President Stan Liberty, NE A ’65, said, “Chemical engineering is a high-demand field recently spurred on by growth in a number of areas of scientific applications.” Read the news article here

John Löf, CT B ’38, worked as a professor and director of the University of Connecticut’s computer center for 30 years. Now he is giving back with a $1 million dollar bequest.

The bequest is equal to the sum total of his retirement benefits. The University plans to use the funds “to improve the vitality of graduate education.” For more information, click here

The Los Angeles Times reports that researchers at the University of California, Riverside, are developing “three classes of odor molecules that could potentially keep mosquitoes away from people.”

The study was reported in the journal Nature and details the process of blocking mosquitoes’ ability to detect carbon dioxide. Read the full article
