Engineering Recognition: Past, Future, & Present

Professor Emeritus at Stanford University Robert Helliwell, CA G ’42, passed way in early May. Along with a graduate student he discovered “whistlers,” or very low frequency radio waves.

Helliwell spent his career researching whistlers, including building a 13-mile long antenna in Antarctica. The Helliwell Hills, an Antarctic mountain range along the coast of Victoria Land on the Ross Sea, are named in his honor. Read the obituary

Clemson University has announced a new endowment established the the memory of First Lt. Glenn Dalton Allen, Jr. (SC A ’61). The new Memorial Grant-in-Aid Endowment will provide grants to outstanding Air Force ROTC participants.

The endowment was given as a gift from Francis Wayne Ouzts in memory of his college classmate and friend Allen. Click here to read the news article

The Women in Engineering Program Advocates Network (WEPAN) announced their 2011 Award recipients. Wendy C. Crone, Ph.D. (IL A ’89), was awarded the Educator’s Award “for exceptional achievement in increasing the participation and retention of women in engineering.”
