The Huffington Post Green is running “a special series profiling trailblazers in energy innovation and champions of the environment.” In a recent article, MIT President Susan Hockfield discussed women in STEM, energy initiatives, and U.S. policy changes.

In her short time at MIT, Hockfield has started the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI), continued to advise the federal government on energy policy, and made a push for “welcoming women and men of all backgrounds” into science, engineering, and math enterprises.

From 2006 to 2010, Ohio public colleges and universities are reporting a 20 percent jump in students graduating with degrees in STEM related fields. Read the full article

Several factors are contributing to the increase, and in an article from the Dayton Daily News two recent graduates are profiled. Jeffrey Kumik, OH X 2011, is a graduate student in computational science and mechanical engineering at Miami University (OH). He switched from studying business to engineering when he realized the benefits of having an engineering degree.

Graduate students at the University of Missouri will partner with Columbia Public Schools’ fourth-and-fifth-grade teachers to teach science as part of a National Science Foundation (NSF) initiative.
