The Los Angeles Times recently highlighted the new solar energy boom in California, where 194 megawatts of new solar capacity was installed last year.

The national trend shows that “biomass and biofuels along with geothermal, solar, water, and wind-power generation were responsible for nearly 12 percent of the country’s energy production during the first quarter of the year.” Read the article

According to sources there is a growing shortage of aviation workers. Lewis University (IL) and its aviation department is ready to step in.

In an article from the Herald News, the factors of the aviation shortage and the development of pilots and mechanics is discussed. Currently, Lewis is also looking to encourage “girls who have an interest in science and math to consider careers in aviation, not just engineering.”

The Stevens Institute of Technology and several other institutions are planning to permanently place a solar-powered home in Deanwood (D.C.). The new house will have the same design as a house from the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon.

Through a partnership with local leaders and the Washington Habitat for Humanity, the house will be given to a family in need. Plans are already in place for a second passive house to be built at the same site.
