Richard G. Higgins, ME Alpha ’79, has been named the 2011 Tau Beta Pi Distinguished Alumnus. Mr. Higgins is a retired Boeing engineer and executive.
Mr. Higgins and Dr. William R. Goodin (CA E ’75), 2011 Tau Beta Pi McDonald Mentor, will be recognized at the 106th annual Convention of Tau Beta Pi to be held in Indianapolis, IN. Dr. Goodin is the director of UCLA’s short course program and also serves as an advisor to the California Epsilon Chapter of TBP. Read the respective press releases here

Popular Science recently profiled a direct-diode laser system soon to be commercialized by TeraDiode. According to the article, the new laser system “is brighter, more powerful, and significantly more compact than its peers.”
TeraDiode is a two-year-old company evolving from MIT’s Lincoln Lab. Dr. Fred J. Leonberger, MI G ’69, is a co-founder and currently a member of the Board of Directors.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has announced the completed pledge of the late Otto H. York “to complete the commitment to the Otto H. York Department of Chemical, Biological, and Pharmaceutical Engineering.”
The funds will be used “to establish an endowment supporting scholarships to attract outstanding students and to support faculty research.” Click here for the press release
