A123 Systems recently was visited by U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu in an effort to support Michigan’s development of electric car batteries and the expansion of clean-energy jobs. Read the article from The Detroit News.

A123 Systems “makes lithium-ion batteries for the transportation, electric grid, and commercial markets.” Company president and CEO, David Vieau (NY B ’72), said “The effective increase in the number of jobs that we have achieved so far happened as the result of a significant amount of work.”

California State University of Los Angeles (CSULA) will host the 2nd Annual Greater Los Angeles Engineer of the Year Gala on August 4th. Click here, for the press release

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is scheduled to receive the “Presidential Award” for his commitment to inspiring students studying the STEM fields. Eight other honorees will be recognized at the gala for engineering education contributions.
Two are Tau Bates:
Commander Kevin M. McCoy, NY O ’78, vice admiral, NAVSEA – Title Sponsor Award
John J. Mastrototaro, NC G ’87, Medtronic – L.A. Designer of the Year Award.

The U.S. Navy has announced the 2010 Top Scientists and Engineers of the Year. Naval Air Systems (NAVAIR) lead Electro-Magnetics technologist Michael Doyle has been named the top Navy engineer for 2010.

Doyle works at the Joint Vase McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (NJ). Doyle was recognized during a July 15th ceremony at the Pentagon. He was cited “for his role as the Navy’s leading expert in high energy, high power electromagnetic systems as they relate to launching and recovering aircraft.” For more information on Doyle and the award, read the full article
