Encouraging STEM Learning

The camp is a hands-on STEM camp, where participants build their own robots to experience the challenges and fun of engineering. The camp is sponsored by the National Defense Education Program and Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC). Palathra is a chemical engineer at NSWC, Indian Head Division.

The Orlando Sentinel recently published an opinion article related to current failings in the high school preparation of students for having success in STEM disciplines in college.

Written by Dr. Paul D. Cottle, MA A ’82, a professor at Florida State University. His piece cites calculus and physics as “the high-school courses most strongly correlated with success in bachelor’s-degree programs in STEM fields.” Read more here

The Lyrical Engineer, aka Baldwin Chiu (CA U ’98), is an engineer by day and an aspiring music artist. See his recent profile from Psychology Today.

His song, I Wanna Be An Engineer, has become a popular anthem in the tech world. Chiu says he even received an email from a student who said, “As a current engineering student, your video has inspired me not to give up.”
