Leaders in Engineering: August 2011

Dr. Mark E. Dean, TN A ’79, blogged last week about the “post-PC era.” Dr. Dean is an IBM CTO and was involved in the design of the original IBM Personal Computer.

The Tulsa World reported on efforts to bring water to communities in Bolivia. Together with a Tulsa-area church action group, the University of Tulsa, and professional associations such as Engineers Without Borders, communities in Bolivia are receiving support for their water needs.

University of Illinois has announced that it will receive a “research grant to find ways to make nuclear power plans safer and more efficient” from the U.S. Department of Energy.

According to the announcement and Dr. James F. Stubbins, (IL A ’70) head of nuclear, plasma and radiological engineering at the university, “researchers will study materials that can withstand extraordinarily high temperatures and resist corrosion.”
