Dr. Ronald L. Adams, OR A ’70, has been dean of Oregon State University’s College of Engineering since 1998. OSU announced this week that Dr. Adams will become the university’s first executive associate vice president for research.
He will begin his new position on October 15th, and OSU will begin its search for a new dean of engineering. Read the full press release for more information on Dr. Adams new position.

Researchers at Rice University have developed cables made out of nanowires that are a fraction of the weight of current copper cables.
In the article, Dr. Enrique Barrera (TX A ’79) indicates that “someday the nanocables could be used in aircrafts, spacecrafts, cars and even to replace electrical wiring in homes.” The technique has been used to light a bulb for several days, but now longer, thicker cables must be built.

The largest gift in Carnegie Mellon University’s history has been planned by a former steel-industry executive. William S. Dietrich II has pledged $265-million to CMU after his death.
CMU president, Dr. Jared L. Cohon (MD A ’69), indicated that the donation will “drive the university’s global efforts and bolster graduate and undergraduate students in scholarship, artistic creation, and research.”
