Developing Engineering, September 2011

Teams are beginning to arrive for the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011 at the National Mall’s West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C.

The competition officially begins on September 23rd, but teams have already arrived and begun reconstructing their solar houses. A recent article from the Chicago Tribune, briefly profiled Purdue University’s team of 20 students.

A NASA engineer recently took the time to visit with third and fourth grade students at her former elementary school. Rachel Wiedemann was most recently “an aerothermal engineer working on the thermal protection system of space shuttle orbiters.”

She returned to Algonquin Road Elementary School (IL) to talk about her experiences and share her stories of outer space exploration, rocket launches, and the science involved in her job. Read the article

The City College of the City University of New York (CUNY) had their Solar Roofpod on the rooftop of one of the college’s Harlem campus buildings until this week.

They are one of 19 teams from across the globe that will be competing in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon this month.
