The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has announced the engineering profession’s highest honors for 2012.

Three Tau Bates from Harvey Mudd College were awarded with the 2012 Bernard M. Gordon Prize “for creating and disseminating innovations in undergraduate engineering design education to develop engineering leaders.”

Dr. Clive L. Dym, MA Z ’62, is a professor and director of the Center for Design Education at Harvey Mudd College. Dr. M. Mack Gilkeson, LA B ’42, is professor emeritus at Harvey Mudd. Dr. J. Richard Phillips, CA A ’56, professor emeritus Harvey Mudd.

Dr. George H. Heilmeier, PA D ’58, was one of four recipients of the NAE 2012 Charles Stark Draper Prize. Dr. Heilmeier was cited for “discovering the dynamic scattering mode (DMI), which resulted in the first operational LCD.”

Today, LCDs (or Liquid crystal display) can be found in a variety of devices, such as calculators, computer monitors, smart phones, and (of course) television screens.

Tau Beta Pi is now accepting submissions for its 2012 awards. This includes the Distinguished Alumnus award (deadline: Feb. 1), the National Outstanding Advisor award (deadline: April 1), the McDonald Mentor award (deadline: April 1), and the Laureate award (deadline: April 1).
