A new study published in the journal Nature Materials details a team from Rensselaer Polytechnic that has “developed a new method of creating advanced nanomaterials.”

A partnership between researchers at the University of Wyoming, the University of Notre Dame, and Zhejiang University in China, has led to genetically engineered silkworms to spin silk containing spider silk proteins. “Those fibers are stronger than fibers normally spun by silkworms and almost as tough as spider silk.”

According to the article, the successful genetic engineering of silkworms has attracted worldwide media attention and the team’s research was publicized in the January edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
