An upcoming feature story in the Technology Review, profiles Martìn Casado, co-founder and CTO of Nicira. Casado, Ph.D. (AZ G ’00), was motivated to find a “radical new way for computer networks to operate” after being stumped as a researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Nicira “is the first company to deliver complete network virtualization.” According to the article, this is accomplished by “writing software that reprograms routers and switches to turn computers into secure networks.” Currently, Nicira has filed nearly 50 patents and secured funding. Another Tau Bate, Steve Mullaney (RI B ’85), is CEO of Nicira.

The U.S. Department of Defense is highlighting February 2012 as African-American History Month, In Defense and Support of our Country. Earlier this month, Lt. William J. Powell was profiled.

Powell served in the 370th Illinois Infantry Regiment during World War I. He returned home to complete his engineering degree at the University of Illinois. He became a certified navigator, aeronautical engineer, and received his pilot license. In 1929, he became the first African-American pilot to fly a congressman. Click here to read more about Lt.
