Colleges are reevaluating the lecture as a style of teaching. In a recent article from the Washington Post, several alternative teaching methods being experimented at U.S. colleges and universities are discussed.
A focus of this trend is in science, math, and engineering classes where “about one-third of students enter college aspiring to STEM majors. Of that group, less than half complete a degree in a STEM field.”

The Chronicle of Higher Education recently profiled a new device that can be implanted in a patient and “deliver precise drug doses” in the place of frequent painful injections. A team of biomedical engineers is responsible for the development of the device and a recent paper published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The Associated Press is reporting that a University of Michigan alumnus is making a $15 million donation to the school’s College of Engineering. The Computer Science and Engineering Building at UM will be renamed in honor of the donor and his wife, Bob and Betty Beyster. Read more
