Recognizing Engineering Education

On Saturday, Feb. 18. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) hosted its annual Exploring Engineering Day. The event celebrates the national Engineers Week. Engineering activities were on display for more than 450 local elementary school students. Click here to learn more

The Tau Beta Pi New York Gamma Chapter at RPI is involved in delivering the engineering sessions at the event. The NY Gamma chapter also recently hosted two MindSET activity sessions for K-12 students at the Troy City (School) District.

The Chronicle of Higher Education recently profiled the Deconstructing Engineering Education Programs project led by Dr. Ilene Busch-Vishniac, (MD A ’78) provost of McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. The project includes calls for a re-evaluation of the engineering curriculum in an effort to retain undergraduate engineering students.

Dr. Matthew Ohland, (FL A ’96) associate professor of engineering at Purdue University, commented that “the rigid structure (of engineering education) not only prevented students from getting out of these programs with a degree, but it also kept potential students from migrating in.” Read the full article for more ideas on retaining engineering students from the recent American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting

In accordance with Engineers Week (Feb. 19-25), employees of the Bechtel Corporation “will host interactive workshops and visit classrooms to show young people the significant and fascinating role engineering plays in the world.” The company is a national supporter of Eweek and specifically Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day on February 23.
