Engineers in the News, April 2012

Texas A&M University announced the recipients of the 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Award on March 28. Tommie E. Lohman, TX D ’59, was among 12 recipients of “the highest honor bestowed upon a former student.”

Lohman was a petroleum engineering graduate at A&M, founder of TELCO Investments, and endowed the Tommie E. Lohman Laboratory for Gas Engineering. He passed away this February at the age of 74. Click here for the full list with bios of the other 11 Distinguished Alumni

The New York Tau Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, at the University of Binghamton, was recently highlighted for their MindSET K-12 work with the local Union Endicott School District students. The NY Tau chapter has a partnership with the Jennie F. Snapp Middle School to run MindSET activity sessions.

MindSET is the national K-12 Math & Science program of Tau Beta Pi. The most recent session involved students learning structural engineering concepts related to building tower structures out of marshmallows and dried spaghetti. Read more from WIVT news

Joel and Jane Buchanan have traveled the world and are recognized in East Tennessee for their photography. The Oak Ridger profiled the couple in an article complete with biographies.

Both graduated from Vanderbilt University with degrees in chemistry. Joel, TN B ’51, went on to become a chemical and nuclear engineer. He co-founded the Nuclear Safety Information Center and the Nuclear Operations Analysis Center, edited the acclaimed journal Nuclear Safety, and received honors for his work on the Three Mile Island nuclear incident.
