The Missouri University of Science and Technology reported that Dr. Kent D. Peaslee, P.E. (CO A ’78), has been appointed president of the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) for 2012-13. Dr. Peaslee is the F. Kenneth Iverson Chair of Steelmaking Technology and Curators’ Teaching Professor of metallurgical engineering at Missouri S&T.
AIST “is an international technical association of professional and student members, representing iron and steel producers, their allied suppliers and related academia.” Dr. Peaslee has research interests in steel manufacturing energy optimization among other aspects of metals manufacturing. Earlier this month, a team from BYU won first place at the international 2012 Formula Hybrid competition. This year’s event took place at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The team from BYU consisted of 16 engineering students and their advisor, professor Robert H. Todd (CA K ’64).
It was a fitting end for Todd, who has announced his retirement this year from teaching. The BYU team’s car is named Hybrid Blue and “has a 100-horsepower, 450-pounds-of-torque engine that runs off both a 72 lithium polymer-celled battery pack and E-85 Fuel.” Click here to read more

William D. Ware, (TX Z 2012) last year’s president of the Texas Zeta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi at Lamar University, has been named one of eight student Plummer Award winners. To be eligible for the Award a student must graduate from Lamar University with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
Ware is graduating with a degree in electrical engineering. He will attend Purdue University as a Purdue Doctoral Fellow beginning in the fall. Read the article
