Engineering Education, May 2012

The Chronicle of Higher Education recently published an article on the University of Rhode Island and its history of pairing engineering with international studies. URI’s International Engineering Program (IEP) is now a model for other engineering programs. According to the article, “fewer than 4 percent of engineering students nationally study abroad. Nearly a third of URI’s undergraduate engineering students enroll in IEP.”

IEP was started twenty-five years ago, by the URI associate dean of arts and sciences and the dean of engineering, Dr. Hermann Viets, NY Z ’65. Dr. Viets is now president of the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Another Tau Bate was mentioned in the article, Jonathan DiMuro, (RI B 2003) project manager at The Dow Chemical Co., for choosing URI for the IEP program’s challenging academic demands
