Recognition & Leadership in Engineering, July 2012

Tau Beta Pi and the McDonald Award for Excellence in Mentoring and Advising program are proud to award the 2012 Tau Beta Pi McDonald Mentor Award to Dr. Derrick K. Rollins, IA A ’79. Dr. Rollins, professor of chemical and biological engineering and professor-in-charge of community based recruitment and transition at Iowa State University, is the sixth recipient of the TBP McDonald Mentor Award sponsored by Marion and Capers W. McDonald, NC G ’74.

The Association press release for this year’s McDonald Mentor recipient will be available on the website soon. Briefly, Dr. Rollins has worked for 22 years at ISU and been an advisor to 35 graduate students, research advisor to more than 130 undergraduate research students, and faculty advisor to 11 campus student organizations.

In Kabul, Afghanistan, Col. Alfred A. Pantano Jr., VA D ’87, took command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in northern Afghanistan in a military ceremony this past weekend. Read the news article

Previously, Col. Pantano was commander of the Jacksonville (FL) District. He received his undergraduate degree in engineering from the Virginia Military Institute. His “unit’s primary operation is directing construction projects designed to bolster Afghanistan’s infrastructure” including roads, buildings, hydropower plants, and more.

Drexel University’s College of Engineering recently awarded their Engineering Leader of the Year Award for 2012. This year’s winner is James F. Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The President of Drexel University, John A. Fry, said, “Drexel believes truly in engineering and the ability of great engineers like you to improve the quality of life for everyone.” Click here, for more from The Triangle
