The University of Kentucky College of Engineering has announced that Dr. John Y. Walz, LA B ’82, has been named the 10th Dean of Engineering and will begin his new position September 1, 2012, pending approval by the UK Board of Trustees.
Dr. Walz has been a professor and department head of chemical engineering at Virginia Polytechnic and State University. Previously, he spent six years as a process support engineer for Shell Oil Company. He has also been on the engineering faculty at Tulane University (his alma mater) and Yale University. Charles W. Caldwell, CA A ’64, and Sue L. Holl, CA L ’76, have been appointed to the Tau Beta Pi Fellowship Board. Created by the 1932 TBP Convention, the Fellowship Board aids the Director of Fellowships in the selection of fellowship and scholarship awardees.

Deborah Estrin is the daughter of Gerald Estrin, (WI A ’48) computer science pioneer, who recently passed away at the age of 90. According to the obituary from UCLA, Gerald Estrin “worked as a research engineer on one of the earliest computers… Many of the pioneers of the Internet were among his students and colleagues.”
