Dr. William R. Hamel, (TN A ’80) professor and head of UT’s mechanical, aerospace, and biomedical engineering department, said, “It has all the elements of a real engineering challenge. It’s complex, it has other disciplines involved, it has computer software, it has the basic mechanics of engineering. It has all the elements of competition and excitement, too. It’s the engineering equivalent of sports.”

Chelsea Ehlert, NY G 2013, a materials engineering senior at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was recently chosen for a campus-wide poster promotion of student profiles at RPI. Her poster profiled her involvement as president of the New York Gamma Chapter of Tau Beta Pi and her extensive work with the TBP MindSET program. Ehlert is also a 2012-13 Tau Beta Pi Scholar.

This past weekend NASA announced that three companies had been awarded contracts “to privately develop the next-generation spacecraft that could take astronauts to the International Space Station.” Those three companies are Boeing Co., Sierra Nevada Corp., and Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX).
According to the article, SpaceX is planning a manned test flight by 2015 of its Dragon capsule, which is capable of carrying seven astronauts.
