The Wall Street Journal recently profiled the research center for wireless technologies at Polytechnic Institute of New York University scheduled to open this winter. Theodore S. Rappaport, Ph.D. (IN A ’82), is the founder and director of the research center that “will combine research in wireless technologies, computing and medical applications.”

According to the article, Dr. Rappaport previously started academic wireless centers at the University of Texas and Virginia Tech. “Wireless is starting to enter its Renaissance,” said Dr. Rappaport.

The University of Wyoming College of Engineering & Applied Science has announced the 2012 Tau Beta Pi Alumnus Eminent Engineer. Lynn Kirlin, Ph.D., was recognized for his service as an engineering faculty member and for “advanced technical contributions to a wide range of disciplines including seismic oil exploration, power electronic converters, array processing for sonar and radar applications, communication systems, and hearing-aid testing.”

An assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is field-testing her invention called a “Microbial Fuel Cell Latrine.” The “green latrine purifies human waste, turning it into compost for farming and generating electricity.”
