On the Move, September 2012

Late last week, the University of Tulsa announced that Dr. James R. Sorem, P.E. (KS A ’80), has been appointed dean of the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS). Dr. Sorem has been the ENS college’s interim dean since February 2012. Read the news announcement

Sorem earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Kansas. He is taking over after the sudden passing of Steven J. Bellovich, OK B ’67.

Lauren M. Smith, OH A 2013, was recently profiled by the Case Western Reserve School of Engineering. Smith is double majoring in aerospace and mechanical engineering. According to the article, her two passions in life are for the arts and engineering. It is no surprise that she was one of the winners of the Tau Beta Pi insignia design contest. See her winning t-shirt design, for sale now at the Tau Beta Pi General Store.

Smith details her hopes of entering the field of defense contracting after graduation and answers some other questions about keeping a healthy balance in “school, friends, family, schoolwork and faith.”

The Register-Herald (WV) is reporting that two NASA representatives will talk to local students on October 5 as part of the October Sky Rocket Boys Festival. Russ L. Werneth, MD B ’64, is a retired extra-vehicular activity manager for the NASA Hubble Space Telescope and he will be one of the speakers.
