The University of Arkansas at Little Rock announced yesterday that Dr. Zulma Toro-Ramos has been named provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. She will begin her new position in January 2013. Currently, Dr. Toro-Ramos, KS B ’82, is dean of the College of Engineering at Wichita State University (WSU) in Kansas. Read the press release

Before joining WSU in 2005, Dr. Toro-Ramos was dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of New Haven, Conn., and was chancellor of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. She received a Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology, a master’s degree in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan, and an undergraduate degree in industrial engineering from the University of Puerto Rico.

In a recent article in the Jobs section of the Houston Chronicle, the high demand for mechanical engineers is highlighted. A director of professional development at the University of Houston College of Engineering cites that “mechanical engineering students are the most requested discipline.”

One important aspect of mechanical engineers is their versatility “as they often work on the newest industrial pursuits creating workable concepts.” Advice is also given for aspiring mechanical engineers – “be creative, be an effective listener, and have outstanding math skills.”
