A recent study from Yale University found that there is a bias towards hiring males in the STEM fields. An article from the Press-Enterprise (CA), profiles female STEM professionals, their experiences with bias, and their reactions to this latest research on STEM hiring bias.
Dr. Sharon L. Walker, CA D ’98, is an assistant professor of engineering at the University of California Riverside. She was not surprised by the study’s finding, “Perhaps the biggest disappointment was that gender bias was universal, said Walker. “To alter that takes time, and it’s going to take a cultural shift.” Read the full article and find out if the problem is more subconscious bias or a national trend

The Florida A&M and Florida State University College of Engineering is celebrating 30 years of their unique partnership. The joint engineering program also has a new dean, Yaw Yeboah, Ph.D. Beginning in 1982 the college had less than 40 students. Today, there are more than 50,000 students enrolled from the two schools. A collegiate chapter of Tau Beta Pi was installed at the engineering school in 1992, as the Florida Eta chapter of Tau Beta Pi.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently highlighted the annual design competition at Carnegie Mellon University. This year 46 mechanical engineering seniors took part. Items created included an improved bicycle light, a hybrid steamer and iron, and a suitcase vacuum pump. Click here to learn more about the improved product designs created for the competition.
