The co-creator of the modern bar code passed away this week at the age of 91. N. Joseph Woodland was a mechanical engineer in training at what is now Drexel University when he and Bernard Silver created the technology that led to the bar code. That New York alumnus chapter of Tau Beta Pi is encouraging Tau Bates to volunteer as judges for the upcoming FIRST Lego League Tournaments to be held across the country in early 2013.
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a tournament-style robotics program that makes learning fun when it comes to Robotics for children. Volunteers are needed to run the tournament in all 5 boroughs, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island. These regional tournaments culminate with a final championship in NYC at the Jacob Javits convention center on Saturday, March 8th. Click here for more information

NewsOne recently profiled Britney Exline, a 2011 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in computer science. According to the article, Exline is 19 years of age, the youngest engineer to graduate from the UPenn school of engineering, and (probably) the youngest African-American engineer in the United States. She is currently a software engineer working outside of Boston with plans to pursue a graduate degree.
