The University of Notre Dame will lead nine other universities in a new microelectronics research center to “explore new ways to dramatically lower the power requirements of electronics.” Grants provided by the Semiconductor Research Corp. and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, together with contributions from the partnering institutions will fund the Center for Low Energy Systems Technology, or LEAST, for the next five years. Thanks to a grant from the Nation Science Foundation (NSF), Oakland University (OU) will award up to 16 engineering scholarships to “academically talented and financially needy students.” The grant was given in support of OU’s Product Lifecycle Management Scholarship Program for students studying industrial and systems engineering or mechanical engineering. MIT Technology Review has highlighted a demonstration by a team at NASA on a new “remote-controlled prototype of its hybrid wing design.” According to the article, the new design is a practical prototype that could reduce fuel use on a conventional aircraft by up to half. The technology is still several years from market and the challenges regarding the hybrid wing design are discussed.
