The University of Texas at Austin has appointed Dr. Thomas F. Edgar, KS A ’67, as the Interim Director of the Energy Institute for a period of one year. Currently, Dr. Edgar is chair of the chemical engineering department at the Cockrell School of Engineering. He worked as a process engineering with the Continental Oil Company before joining the faculty at UT in 1971. Click here for the press release

The Tau Beta Pi 2013 District Conference schedule will pick up beginning the first weekend of March. Three conferences are scheduled for March 2-3: the District 5 conference will take place in Savannah, GA; the District 13 conference will take place in Lubbock, TX, hosted by Texas Beta; and the District 14 conference will take place in Portland, OR, hosted by Oregon Gamma. Accompanying TBP alumni gatherings will be held in conjunction with these three conferences.

Forbes recently profiled research and development being done at the Electronic Visualization Lab at the University of Illinois. A Ph.D. candidate there is working on developing a suit with “tiny robotic arms equipped with ultrasonic sensors that give the operator a spider-sense.”
The creator of the suit cites the UIC Human Augmentics class taught by Dr. Jason Leigh, UT A ’88, and two other professors for contributing to the idea. Read the article for more details on how the suit sensors alert the wearer to danger
