The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has awarded Stephen A. Cook, Ph.D. (MI G ’61), with the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering. This award is “the NSERC’s highest honor, which recognizes research contributions characterized by both excellence and influence. It is awarded annually to an individual who has demonstrated sustained excellence and influence in research for a body of work conducted in Canada that has substantially advanced the fields of natural sciences or engineering.” Read the news announcement

Dr. Cook is currently a professor (emeritus) at the University of Toronto. He is cited for “having a lasting impact in the field of computer science.” He previously received an A.M. Turing Award for his work and “his inquiries (that) are now among the essential theoretical results that all computer science graduates must understand. The basic question he raised is now among the seven Millennium Prize Problems in mathematics.”

Dr. Michael S. Branicky, P.E. (OH A ’87), has been named as the next dean of the University of Kansas School of Engineering. He will join KU as dean on July 1. Currently, Dr. Branicky is a professor and chair of the electrical engineering and computer science department at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). Click here for the full press release

He has degrees degrees in electrical engineering and applied physics from CWRU and earned his doctorate in electrical engineering and computer science from the MIT. More recently, he served as an external expert to NSF for the National Robotics Initiative.
