On Campus, April 2013

Manhattan College has announced that Charles H. Thornton, Ph.D., P.E., will be the keynote speaker on May 19 for the College’s Commencement. Dr. Thornton, NY X ’61, is currently chairman of Charles H. Thornton & Co., LLC, and will also receive an honorary doctorate in engineering as part of the ceremony.

Dr. Thornton received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College. He is “one of the worlds’ preeminent structural engineers and led the design of two of the world’s tallest structures: the Taipei 101 in Taiwan, and the Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia.” Read the article for more information

Lacey S. Williams, VA A 2013, is one of two University of Virginia students that recently received a Davis Projects for Peace award and will use the funds “to help educate poor and oppressed women in Tanzania.” Williams is a biomedical engineering senior that has worked with the Jifundsihe Free Library to devise a “plan to increase women’s empowerment through agricultural and business education and microlending.” Read the news article here

GUTV at Gonzaga University recently profiled the Washington Delta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi on campus in a video posted to YouTube. TJ Ellis, WA D 2014, chapter treasurer was interviewed for the story and discussed his motivations and goals for the WA Delta Chapter. Ellis is currently majoring in mechanical engineering.
