A couple with ties to the University of Kansas have made a gift “to support the construction and equipping of the new Hill Engineering Research and Development Center. The center will house KU EcoHawks, a student research program of the School of Engineering that focuses on developing innovative, sustainable energy solutions for transportation and other areas of research.”
Ronald Hill and his wife Sue made the generous gift. Ronald is president of HEMCO and earned his undergraduate engineering degree from KU. Sue is the vice president of customer development at HEMCO. Click here to read the news release

The University of Colorado at Boulder has taken a term from sports and applied it to developing students for academic success. Boulder’s GoldShirt program, similar to athletic redshirting, “identifies high school graduates who need time to catch up on math, science, and humanities courses before proceeding to the full undergraduate engineering curriculum.”
Using Boulder’s program as an example, the University of Washington (UW) and Washington State University have announced a collaboration on a similar redshirting program under the banner of the Washington State Academic RedShirts (STARS) in Engineering Program. Eve A. Riskin, (MA B ’84) associate dean of engineering at UW, said, “If we find people from underserved backgrounds or challenging circumstances who succeeded despite their lack of privilege when we put them in an engineering context that supports them, they can go on and be fabulous engineers.” Read the full article from Inside Higher Ed

The Denver Business Journal is reporting that the University of Denver has received a trio of financial gifts toward the construction of a new engineering and computer science building. The building will be named the Daniel Felix Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science. The building is part pf a mew interdisciplinary Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiative. Read the article and visit the university’s web site for more information
