On June 6-7, teams will converge on Marshall, MI, for the SAE International Supermileage Competition. Last year’s winning team from Penn State Erie, The Behrend College (Penn State Behrend), is preparing to defend their title. With a team made up of current students, alumni, and faculty member Richard B. Englund, P.E. (WA B ’74), the team plans to surpass the 1,400 miles per gallon that led them to victory in 2012. The team faces stiff competition this year, including a team from Canada that could hit the 3,500 mpg mark. However, twin brothers John and Taylor Pearson who graduated from Penn State Behrend in May have returned to help improve last year’s car design, secured funding from Lord Corp, and added high-quality tires. The Pearson brothers (PA M 2013) were both recently hired by Lord Corp. and have helped the team find sponsors to cover travel expenses for the 20-member team.

The MetroWest Daily News is reporting that Worcester Polytechnic Institute will host the NASA Sample Return Robot Centennial Challenge this weekend. There are 11 civilian teams competing with “robots that are tasked with retrieving objects placed on a competition field.”
As part of the partnership with NASA, astronaut Capt. Stephen G. Bowen, MD G ’86, will also address teachers from 25 school districts across the state about the importance of STEM education and other issues on June 6. Lastly, on Saturday at the WPI campus there will be a free, interactive festival of science, technology and robots co-hosted by TouchTomorrow. Click here to learn more
