NASA has announced the 2013 Astronaut Candidate Class. A total of eight candidates were selected from more than 6,100 applicants. According to NASA, “the group will receive a wide array of technical training at space centers around the globe to prepare for missions to low-Earth orbit, and asteroid and Mars.” Two of the newly selected candidates are Tau Bates:

Tyler “Nick” Hague – (CO Z ’98) Lt. Colonel, U.S. Air Force, and deputy chief at the Department of Defense
Nicole Aunapu Mann – (MD G ’99) Major, U.S. Marine Corps, and F/A 18 pilot & Product Team Lead at U.S. Naval Air Station

The 29th Tau Beta Pi Alumni Chapter was installed last week. The Atlanta Alumni Chapter hosted an installation ceremony on June 25 at the Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant. There were 15 charter members of the Atlanta Alumni Chapter. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Maryland Section has named Joel K. Oppenheimer, P.E. (PA D ’79), as the Civil Engineer of the Year. Oppenheimer is currently vice president at STV, where he leads the Baltimore Office’s Transportation & Infrastructure Division practice. He also serves as the Baltimore Red Line Deputy Program Manager for the Program Management Consultant (PMC).
