Women in Engineering, October 2013

The International Society of Engineering Education has awarded Susan M. Lord, Ph.D. (NY D ’87), with the Nikola-Tesla Chain “for outstanding achievements in education and pedagogy.” The ceremony took place in Kazan, east of Moscow, and Lord described the event for The San Diego Union-Tribune, LLC. Tau Bea Pi’s 108th Convention will begin on October 31 in Ames, Iowa. The Association is pleased to welcome Gwenne A. Henricks, (IL D ’81) vice president of product development & global technology and CTO at Caterpillar, Inc., as the keynote speaker for the Welcoming Dinner program. Henricks has a master’s degree in electrical engineering and has held numerous positions since joining Caterpillar, including senior design engineer, 6 Sigma Deployment Champion, and general manager Cat® Electronics.

The Democrat & Chronicle (NY) recently profiled Wendi Heinzelman, Ph.D. (NY D ’95), as a “woman to watch.” She is currently an engineering professor and Dean of graduate studies for arts, sciences, and engineering at the University of Rochester. According to the article, Dr. Heinzelman’s mission is “to encourage more women to choose careers in engineering and computer science.”

She co-founded N2 Women, “an organization with 650 members worldwide and includes career and research-focused meetings and panels at major conferences, professional development workshops and mentoring opportunities.” Her unique experience with engineering includes having supportive parents, one of whom is Lawrence R. Rabiner, Ph.D. (MA B ’64).
