Emily L. Allen, Ph.D., has been appointed as the Dean of the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology (ECST) at California State University, Los Angeles. Dr. Allen, NY A ’84, will begin her position on November 12, 2013. Since 2008, Dr. Allen has been associate dean in the college of engineering at San Jose State University. She has a bachelor’s in metallurgy and materials science from Columbia University. Read more from The University Times

The Chicago Tribune recently covered the ninth annual Pumpkin Launch at the Illinois Institute of Technology. This year, 12 structures were built by nearly 100 students to launch pumpkins. Johns Hopkins has announced that T.E. “Ed” Schlesinger, Ph.D., has been named dean of the Whiting School of Engineering, effective January 1, 2014. Currently, Dr. Schlesinger is a professor and department head of electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Read the news release
