This week the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of The National Academies announced 70 new members and ten foreign associates. Election to the IOM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. The new members were announced during IOM’s 43rd annual meeting. Two of the new members are Tau Bates:

Quynh-Thu Xuan Le, M.D. – (CA B ’89) chairman and professor, department of radiation oncology, Stanford University
David J. Mooney, Ph.D. – (WI A ’86) professor of bioengineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Harvard University

Lynn H. Grasshoff, 94, was profiled by The Acorn (CA) for recently publishing his first novel, “The Gift.” Grasshoff, TX D ’41, is a retired aerospace engineer whose novel “explores politics and the decision-making process of corporations.” Click here to read the article and learn more about “The Gift” and Grasshoff who taught electrical engineering at Texas A&M and spent 27 years with Hughes Aircraft Company.

The 2013 Solar Decathlon winners were recently highlighted by the Los Angeles Times. First place went to a team from the Vienna University of Technology from Austria. They barely beat out the team from the University of Nevada Las Vegas and overall it was a close competition between the other 17 collegiate teams. This year’s competition took place in Irvine, California. Other notable finishes included Stanford University in fifth place, University of Southern California in 10th place, and a joint team from the Southern California Institute of Architecture and Caltech in 14th place.
