The current vice president of the Idaho Beta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi at Idaho State University (ISU) was recently profiled as part of an ISU series on “Brightest and Best in Science & Engineering.” Larinda Nichols, ID B 2014, is a nuclear engineering major, registered yoga instructor, and a mother of two. In November, Christine E. Hailey, Ph.D., P.E. (OK A ’81), became the dean of Utah State University’s College of Engineering. Dr. Hailey had been serving as the interim dean since July 2013. Previously, she was an engineering professor and director of the USU National Center for Engineering and Technology Education.

Two scholarships as part of the Lonnie Lee and Maria Elena Abernethy Endowment for Native Americans in Engineering will be awarded in 2014. The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) recently announced that these scholarships would be awarded for the 2014-15 academic year. The deadline to apply is February 17, 2014, for sophomores and May 15, 2014, for freshman.
The scholarships will be awarded to “female engineering students studying at either the University of New Mexico or New Mexico State University and students must meet the eligibility requirements of all SWE Scholarships as well as the specifics of the Abernethy scholarship.” Click here to read more about these scholarship opportunities
