Popular Science recently profiled a revolutionary medical technology being developed by RevMedx, Inc. The XStat is “a modified syringe that injects specially coated sponges into wounds and could boost survival and spare injured soldiers from additional pain by plugging wounds faster and more efficiently than gauze.” Read the article
The Oregon-based startup has recently asked the FDA to approve the invention, which would “be the first battlefield dressing created specifically for deep, narrow wounds.” Kenton W. Gregory, M.D. (CA D ’77), is co-founder, chairman, and CTO of RevMedx. He is also the Director of the Oregon Health & Science University Center for Regenerative Medicine. In addition, Paul T. Longo, PA D ’95, is VP and Director of strategic development at RevMedx.

Many media outlets have labeled Microsoft’s 2014 Super Bowl commercial entitled “Empowering,” about the many possibilities technology has opened up, as one of the best commercials from this year’s game. From the commercial, “Technology has the power to unite us. it inspires us. Technology has taken us places we’ve only dreamed. It gives hope to the hopeless, and it has given voice to the voiceless.”
Included in the commercial (at about the 40 second mark) is Keith A. Comeaux, Ph.D. (LA A ’89), as he celebrates the Curiosity Mars Rover mission. Dr. Comeaux is Team Chief, MSL Cruise/Approach Engineering Operations at Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Watch the video here

IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal: Thomas P. Barnwell III (MA B ’65) – Professor Emeritus Georgia Institute of Technology, “for leadership in and contributions to speech processing, filter banks and wavelets, DSP hardware and architectures, and technology-enhanced education.”
IEEE Medal in Power Engineering: Thomas A. Lipo (WI B ’62) – Emeritus Professor University of Wisconsin-Madison, “for contributions to electrical machine and drive topologies.”
IEEE John Von Neumann Medal: Cleve B. Moler (CA B ’61) – Chief Mathematician MathWorks, “for fundamental and widely used contributions to numerical linear algebra and scientific and engineering software that transformed computational science.”
IEEE Ernst Weber Managerial Leadership Award: Paul E. Jacobs (CA A ’84) – CEO Qualcomm, Inc., “for leadership in the development and commercialization of mobile technologies that contributed significantly to the growth of its global industry.”
