The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) recently announced the appointment of Julia M. Ross, Ph.D. (IN A ’90), as the new Dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology beginning on August 4, 2014. Dr. Ross is currently a professor of engineering at UMBC where she has previously served as chair of her department and helped “a successful merger of two academic programs to form the department of chemical, biochemical and environmental engineering.”

She has authored and co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and the K-12 INSPIRES Curriculum. “Dr. Ross is known for her commitment to shared governance and for advancing opportunities for women and underrepresented minorities in engineering and information technology.” Read the press release for more information

NASA astronaut Richard A. Mastracchio, CT B ’82, has returned to earth following a 188-day orbit aboard the International Space Station (ISS) where he served as flight engineer for Expedition 38. He stayed busy while aboard ISS, including a recent graduation ceremony speech given to engineering graduates at his alma mater the University of Connecticut. His speech was delivered from ISS while he orbited earth in which he said, “I probably have the best job on and off the planet.”

Congratulations to recent civil engineering graduate Jason J. Frick, AL E 2014, as Baskerville Donovan Engineering (BDI) has announced the hiring of Frick as a civil engineer intern (EI) in the Mobile, AL office. Frick graduated earlier this month with a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Alabama and is the secretary of the Mobile branch of the Association of General Contractors.
