Undergraduate students from Howard University will participate in a summer research project lead by Lorraine N. Fleming, Ph.D., P.E. (DC A ’78), as part of a National Science Foundation-funded Global Education, Awareness and Research Undergraduate Program (GEAR-UP). There will be 32 students from the STEM fields that will travel to eight countries conducting research.
Dr. Fleming is a professor of civil engineering at Howard and is also the GEAR-UP director. “Our mission at Howard is to produce leaders for America and the global community. GEAR-UP is doing just that by allowing students a first-hand opportunity to practice as engineers and scientists in a global setting,” said Dr. Fleming. Read the article

It has been a busy 2014 for mechanical engineering student Koji Muto, NY K 2015. In February, Muto was awarded the 2014 Kelly Future Engineers Scholarship provided by Kelly Services for his essay on the topic of hydrokinetic energy “the next great revolution in the energy world.” He was selected from nearly 100 applicants based on his “scholastic performance, passion for the field of engineering, and outstanding essay.” Then in March he was elected to serve as president of the New York Kappa Chapter of Tau Beta Pi. Finally, this week he received the Outstanding Student Organization Award by the Japanese Students’ Association for going “beyond the bounds of their membership by helping to create a positive campus environment for all students.”
Muto is a double major, including business, at the The University of Rochester, where he ranks first in his class for both mechanical engineering and business. He is the co-founder and business manager of the Japanese Students’ Association; serves as a Mechanical Engineering volunteer tutor and a teaching assistant for Solid Mechanics, and is active in STEM Initiative, UR Biodiesel, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Golden Key, and Men’s Frisbee.
