Sandia National Laboratories recently highlighted the New Mexico Small Business Assistance (NMSBA) program and a few of the recent success stories, including that of a data center swivel lift. The creator of the Data Center Transitions Inc., Bill Watts, needed help finding parts and trouble-shooting with motor related problems. Through NMSBA he was partnered with Sandia mechanical engineer Jeff Dabling, UT B ’00.
Dabling “worked with colleagues to redesign the lift’s power system including the motor, clutch, electronic brake and controller.” His assistance allowed Watts to cut costs by 20 percent and keep production in Albuquerque. His customers now include Microsoft Corp. and Facebook, which have bought dozens of the lifts. Dabling is a Tau Beta Pi District Director and former chapter president at Brigham Young University. The Florida Zeta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, at Florida Institute of Technology (FIT), held their spring initiation ceremony in late April and welcomed 45 new members, the most in the chapter’s 28-year history. Sneh M. Patel, FL I 2014, a senior aerospace engineering major at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (FL) was recently selected for the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Men’s At-Large College Division second team. Patel is a member of the man’s golf team leading the Eagles at the 2014 National Championships finishing tied for 54th, is a two-time NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Conference selection, and is a member of the Eagles’ sub-70 club, shooting a 69 in 2012 and a 69 in 2014.
