Engineering FYI, July 2014

A new website that provides information on the earning potential of various engineering jobs is hoping to become a primary resource for those “looking for salary information, job searching, or career exploration in engineering careers.” The website is Engineer Salary and can be found here

In conjunctions with the ACM MobiCom 2014, Maite Brandt-Pearce, Ph.D. (TX G ’85), will give the keynote address on the 1st ACM Workshop on Visible Light Communication Systems. The event is scheduled for September 7, 2014, in Maui, Hawaii. “Visible light communication (VLC) is based on modulating inexpensive LEDs that are simultaneously used for illumination. This dual-use approach can offer energy-efficient connectivity as well as high throughput due to the huge unregulated optical spectrum.” Click here for more information on Dr. Brandt-Pearce, engineering professor at the University of Virginia, and for details on how to register for MobiCom 2014.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau “nearly 75 percent of all holders of bachelor’s degrees in STEM disciplines don’t have jobs in STEM occupations.” These details and other related information was released in a recent report from a survey of 3.5 million homes. On the bright side, those with bachelor’s degrees in STEM “are more likely than other college graduates to have a job.” Read the article from The Washington Post with more information
