The 2014 STAR Awards, recognizing key contributors in the Hispanic community in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), have been announced by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). The STAR Awards offers several honored categories representing exceptional college students to industry professionals and public and private corporations. The recipients were recognized at this year’s SHPE Conference, November 5–9 in Detroit, MI.

Three of the winners are Tau Bates. They are:
1. Community Service – Art Felix (CA Q ’76), Northrop Grumman
2. Hispanic in Technology, Government – Robert Hernandez, Ph.D. (RI B ’10), Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division
3. Jaime Oaxaca Award – Emir Macari, Ph.D. (CA U ’79), California Smart Grid Center

National Medal of Science
Sean C. Solomon (CA B ’66)- of Columbia University for creative approaches and outstanding contributions to understanding the internal structure and evolution of the Earth, the Moon, and other terrestrial planets, and for his leadership and inspiration of new generations of scientists.
National Medal of Technology and Innovation
Charles W. Bachman (MI A ’48) – For fundamental inventions in database management, transaction processing, and software engineering.

Two Tau Bates were recently selected for the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s & Women’s Division III soccer teams. Click here for the All-America Division III men’s and women’s first, second, and third teams Academic All-America teams.
Logan M. Andryk – WI D 2016, a biomolecular chemical engineering major at the Milwaukee School of Engineering and first team All-American; he was a NSCAA All-American in each of his first two seasons, repeated as the NACC Offensive Player of the Year this season, currently leads the nation with 25 assists, and broke the school and conference record for assists in a season and sits tied for sixth in NCAA Division III history.
Amanda L. Murray – NY P 2015, a biomedical engineering senior from the Rochester Institute of Technology and third team All-American; she has a 3.9 cumulative G.P.A., was named to the 2013 Liberty League All-Academic Team, and has the lowest goals against average in program history at 0.76 and third highest save percentage at .855.
