The Lebanon Express recently published an article about Adam Z. Higgins, Ph.D. (OR A ’02), and a team of engineers at Oregon State University (OSU) “working to develop a process that would remove glycerol (from blood that has been frozen).” Results from their initial experiments and computer modeling of the process have been published in the journal Biomicrofluidics.
Dr. Higgins is an association professor at OSU in the school of chemical, biological, and environmental engineering. “The grand vision would require a complete rethinking of how blood is banked now,” Dr. Higgins said. “It would go from a primarily refrigerated system to a primarily frozen system where you could conveniently thaw and wash the blood that you need in emergencies.” Read the article for more details

Buchta – IN B 2015, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and first team All-American; he is the starting left tackle for the Fightin’ Engineer offensive line, earned a Heminway Bronze Medal scholar award, and is a three-time selection who was named to the first team this season after being named to the second team All-America in both ’12 and ’13.
Andrew C. McManus – MA I 2015, a mechanical engineering senior from the Western New England (WNE) University and first team All-American; is on a Presidential Scholarship at WNE, is a two-time CoSIDA/Capital One Academic® All-District I First Team performer, and is a four-year starter and offensive line captain for the Golden Bears.
Eric M. Taylor – IN B 2015, a senior from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology majoring in computer engineering and first team All-American; he has earned three all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honors for his play on the Rose-Hulman offensive line, is the starting left guard, and helped two teammates rank in the top five nationally in four statistical categories.
