The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) President C.D. Mote Jr., Ph.D. (CA A ’59), has announced the election of 67 new members and 12 foreign members into the NAE. Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. “Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to ‘engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature,’ and to the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.”

Scott M. Shields, AZ A 2011, received the 2014 Medal of Merit Young Professional award at the December American Hall of Fame Awards Banquet sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest. Shields manages a team of Joy Global mining engineers, supporting the applications of P&H Surface Mining and Joy Mining Machinery underground products. He was noted for providing “optimization and best practice in more than 60 mines in 18 countries on five continents. Shields is an adviser for the University of Arizona ILB, Montana Tech MIAB, University of Missouri Science and Technology Advisory Committee, South Dakota School of Mines ECE Advisory Board and also serves as an executive committee member and officer of the SME. At a recent TEDxUniversity of Nevada event, Misha Raffiee, CA B 2014, gave a talk entitled “Engage and Embrace Your Natural Curiosity by Asking ‘Why?'” Raffiee, 20 years of age, is co-founder of Caltech InnoWorks, a for-student initiative to provide underserved middle school student with outstanding hands-on educational opportunities in STEM. She enrolled at Caltech, double majoring in bioengineering and business economics & management, after finishing high school at the age of 15. She is currently a research fellow at Caltech.
In addition, she is an avid violinist and is in her fourth season as concertmaster of the Caltech-Occidental Symphony Orchestra. “Misha has been published on LiveScience and as a headlining author on NSF.gov. She has also been featured in The New York Times, CNN, ABC Nightline, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and numerous other publications and books.” Watch the video of her talk here
