The University of Texas System Board of Regents recently named Gregory L. Fenves, Ph.D. (NY D ’79), as “the sole finalist for the presidency of The University of Texas (UT) at Austin.” Dr. Fenves is currently the provost and executive vice president at UT, since 2013. Previously, he served for five years as the dean of UT’s Cockrell School of Engineering. He earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at Cornell and his doctorate at UC Berkeley. He began his career as an assistant professor in civil engineering at UT Austin from 1984-87.
UT Board Chairman Paul Foster said, “Dr. Fenves is a gifted administrator and academician who has had a stellar record of leadership at two of America’s top public research universities. His passion for and dedication to UT Austin were evident in his interview and I am thrilled to begin this new chapter with him at the helm.” Read the news release for more information

Marsha L. Bell, CO B ’69, was recently profiled by the Bonner County Daily Bee (ID) for her successful engineering career. She graduate from the University of Colorado at Boulder (UC) in 1969 with a degree in mechanical engineering and according to the article was “the only person in the UC class of 1969 to receive Tau Beta Pi honors—one of America’s most prestigious of engineering honor societies.”
She went to work at Westinghouse working on “vacuum-less electron beams for three years, published scholarly papers, and event put an electron beam gun in orbit around the Earth on the Space Lab.” She spent the final 21 years of her career at Rockwell International at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state.

The Chronicle of Higher Education recently published a Q&A with the retiring president of the Milwaukee School of Engineering Hermann Viets, Ph.D. (NY Z ’65). Dr. Viets is only the fourth president of the 112-year-old institution and has led the college for 24 years. Click here to read more
Dr. Viets previously was previously a visiting scientist, aerospace engineer and research group leader for Wright Patterson Air Force Base Aerospace Research Laboratories (OH). He also served as dean of engineering at the University of Rhode Island. He received a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, and both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in astronautics, all from Polytechnic University (NY).
