Three UCLA Emeriti Professors have been selected to receive the 2015 Edward A. Dickson Emeritus Professorship Award, “to honor outstanding research, scholarly work, teaching, and service performed by an Emeritus or Emerita Professor since retirement.” Leonard Kleinrock, Ph.D. (MA B ’62), is one of this year’s recipients. He joined UCLA in the computer science department in 1963 and formally retired in 1994.
“He is credited with being one of the ‘founding fathers’ of the Internet. Dr. Kleinrock and his team pioneered ground breaking protocols that would later become the foundation of modern wireless networks. Since his retirement in 1994, he has continued to receive generous grant and contract support, continued to build UCLA’s reputation for wireless communication development, launched several commercial ventures, and even chaired his department. In this period, he has published 70 research papers and has received numerous honors, including the prestigious Presidential Medal of Science in 2007.”

Earlier this month, the book “A Primer for Financial Engineering: Financial Signal Processing and Electronic Trading” was co-authored by electrical and computer engineering professor Ali N. Akansu, and Mustafa U. Torun, Ph.D. (NJ G 2012).
Dr. Torun is currently a software development engineer for Amazon Web Services and a former student of professor Akansu at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). According to the NJIT News Room article, “the book bridges the fields of finance, mathematical finance, and engineering, and is targeted at engineers and computer scientists who are looking to apply engineering principles to financial markets.”
