A recent news article from MIT, announced that the Massachusetts Beta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi at MIT has awarded $5,000 to recent MIT graduate Elaine Kung “to continue work on the design and implementation of compost toilets in Santa Ana, El Salvador.” Kung is a new member of the MIT D-Lab and traveled with lab instructor Libby Hsu, NY G ’09, to Santa Ana to work on ASAPROSAR’s compost toilet design, reducing its construction cost and involving community members in an exploration of innovative materials and construction techniques.
Hsu is enthusiastic about Kung’s continued work in Santa Ana as well: “I am so pleased that Elaine has chosen to spend her summer carrying this important project forward with D-Lab and ASAPROSAR.” Hsu adds, “D-Lab has (been) collaborating with ASAPROSAR since 2011 on projects that improve the livelihoods of women, children, and families living in poverty, and I’m grateful to Tau Beta Pi for making it possible to continue this work.”

Liz Bird – CA Y 2015, a graduating senior majoring in bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and third team All-American; she was a member of the women’s swimming and diving team, placed fifth in three-meter diving at conference championships, and has been accepted into specialized M.D./Ph.D. Medical Scientist Training Program at UCSD School of Medicine.
Samantha McCuskey – FL Z 2015, a recent chemical engineering graduate from the Florida Institute of Technology and third team All-American; she was senior coxswain on the women’s rowing team, was a two-time Academic All-District selection, was a four-time selection to the Sunshine State Conference Commissioner’s Spring Honor Roll, and twice served as vice president to the FL Zeta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi where she is now a chapter advisor.

The McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin recently profiled four graduating members of the class of 2015. The four students were chosen, out of 118 graduates, based on their successful college careers and plans for the future. Teresa Wu, TX A 2015, was one of the four profiled students. She is a chemical engineering graduate, will work as a reservoir engineer for ConocoPhillips, and was very involved in TBP with the TX Alpha Chapter.
