Wayne State College of Engineering (MI) has named biomedical engineering doctoral student Tonya J. Whitehead, MI E 2015, as the recipient of the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) Scholarship. The scholarship was created through a donation from SMDI as a way to honor the career of Wayne State alumna Elizabeth Krear, MI E ’88, chief engineer of the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel at the Chrysler Group LLC.
According to the news article, the donation is intended to support a member of Wayne State’s chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) in their pursuit of an engineering degree. Whitehead’s research is focused on using biomaterials for neural tissue engineering. Her doctoral project utilizes electrospun nanofibers along with growth factors to direct and enhance peripheral nerve regeneration after injury. She also remains active with the MI Epsilon Chapter of Tau Beta Pi having previously serves as a cataloger, recording secretary, and being chosen as a 2014 TBP Laureate.

Several students from the UC Santa Barbara College of Engineering, specifically Tau Beta Pi and ASME members, took time at the end of their academic careers to give back to the community in the form of the new waterwheel at Anisq ‘Oyo Park in Isla Vista. The group of mechanical engineering students took down the previous wheel that had been broken, possibly for decades, and replaced it with a new one. Christopher G. Jeznach, MA A ’10, has been selected as part of the “30 Under 30” Class of 2014, as recognized by the Young Fastener Professionals and the Fastener Industry Coalition. Jeznach is product sales manager for coiled spring pins at SPIROL (MA). Previously, he worked for ExxonMobil Gas & Power, graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a degree in mechanical engineering, and studied abroad in Namibia, Africa.
